The Board and CEO Profiles
The Australian Power Institute is governed by a Board consisting of the following members:
CHAIRMAN
Mr Simon Bartlett B.E.(Hons),BSc, FIEAust, FAICD, FATSE, CPEng
- Chief Operating Officer for Powerlink Queensland.
- Director on the Board of ElectraNet, the privatized South Australian Transmission Business.
- Chairman of the Queensland Power Engineering Alliance.
Simon has 35 years of experience in the Australian, European and North American power generation and transmission industries. He is responsible for ensuring that the Queensland electricity transmission network meets Queensland’s growing needs reliably and efficiently.
BOARD MEMBERS
Mr Phil Southwell
- General Manager Strategy and Corporate Affairs for Western Power.
- Member of the University of WA Industry Advisory Council, CIGRE Study committee C1(System Development and Economics).
Phil has over 35 years experience in the industry in activities including, electricity reform, customer interfaces, external communications, business revenue and network pricing. As a significant employer of electrical engineers in Western Australia, Western Power recognizes the critical role that API can play in facilitating a co-ordinated and high quality approach to the supply of engineers to the industry.
Mr John Azaris B.E., MBA
- General Manager Human Resources for SP AusNet.
- Employer Director of Equipsuper.
John is responsible for all human resource functions, media and internal communications. He has had an extensive career in the power industry.
Mr Peter McIntyre B.Sc. B.E. (Hons), MBA (Technology Management)
- General Manager/Network Development and Regulatory Affairs TransGrid.
Peter is responsible for the network planning, transmission pricing, regulated revenue assurance and regulatory affairs functions for the NSW-based TransGrid, the largest transmission company in the National Electricity Market(NEM).
His current role is his third General Manager position with TransGrid in the past five years, providing Peter with a broad understanding at the Executive level of the role of transmission in the NEM. He has extensive experience in policy and asset management roles.
The transmission sector of the NEM is undergoing a period of significant capital investment, which is likely to be sustained for some time into the future. This creates great demand on availability to high quality engineering staff, and provides tremendous career opportunities in this sector. Peter sees the work of the API as providing critical support to the industry in encouraging new students and graduates and growing the power engineering profession.
Mr Paul Brazier
- General Manager Network Services for Country Energy.
Paul has worked in the electricity distribution industry in NSW for the last 25 years in a wide range of professional engineering and senior management roles. In his current role with Country Energy, Paul is responsible for the delivery of the total sub-transmission capital works program. His role encompasses all engineering strategy & design functions across NSW, the development of distribution industry electrical engineering resources and building capability for the future.
Ms Terryl Frazer
- Manager Human Resources, Macquarie Generation
Mr Chris Arnold B.E., Grad Dip Bus Management
- General Manager Network Performance for ENERGEX Limited.
Chris has worked in the electricity industry in Queensland (in both transmission and distribution) over the past 26 years in a wide range of professional engineering and senior management roles. He is currently ENERGEX's General Manager Network Performance responsible for Network Capital Planning, Network Reliability and Maintenance, Technical Standards, Corporate Safety, Environment, Network Property Data and Coordination and Demand and Risk Management. Chris believes that the API plays a valuable role in promoting the power engineering profession to new graduates thus ensuring the supply of good quality power engineers into the future through its partnering with universities.
Mr Lawrance Cleary AFAIM, PGDBA
- Manager Power Solutions, Ergon Energy.
- Queensland Chairman and National Board member of the EESA (The Electric Energy Society of Australia).
Lawrie has been working within the Electricity Industry for over 30 years. Lawrie began his career with Wilson Transformers, based in Glen Waverley. Since then Lawrie has held a number of Managerial roles within Powerlink Queensland and Ergon Energy. Lawrie’s current role at Ergon Energy has an overarching responsibility for the ongoing development of Ergon Energy’s non-traditional revenue streams. Lawrie manages a number of profitable stand-alone business units that provide the market with isolated generation solutions, manufacturing and maintenance prowess and a range of renewable energy products and services.
Mr Peter Anthony Langdon B.Eng
- Regional Managers, Integral Energy.
Peter has been working within the Electricity Distribution Industry for over 23 years. Peter began his career with Illawarra Electricity, based in Wollongong. Since then Peter has held a number of Engineering and Managerial roles within Illawarra Electricity / Integral Energy including a 6 year period as Manager System Operations. Peter is currently one of the 3 regional managers at Integral Energy. Over the past 5 years Peter has taken an active role in the development of an undergraduate and graduate program for Integral, and is keen to take a more active role in the development of young engineers for the electricity industry. Peter has a Bachelor of Engineering and an MBA, both from Wollongong University.
Mr John Bund
- General Manager Human Resources, Delta Electricity.
John comenced employment with BHP working for a number of different divisions including BHP Collieries, Lysaghts, House Framing and Port Kembla's integrated steel works. Over the past 12 years John has worked for Qantas Airways' Airports Division in Industrial Relations, Human Resources and Operational roles. John joined Delta Electricity in 2007 and has responsibility for all aspects of the Human Resources portfolio. John is particularly interested in industrial relations and organisational development and to play a role at API in shaping the future supply skilled engineering staff to the industry.
Mr Brett Hooper B.eng
- Executive Manager - Design and Engineering Services, Energy Australia
Brett has over 26 years of experience in the electrical transmission and distribution industry. He joined Energy Australia (Sydney County Council) as an Engineering Cadet in 1983. Brett has extensive distribution experience and has held positions in Network Control, Technical Services and Field Services. In his current role, he is responsible for all facets of major substation design and engineering including the Architectural, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Building and Electrical requirements.
Brett has a particular interest in building engineering capability, through a combination of undergraduate and post graduate training. He is an active member of Energy Australia’s mentoring program and has 10 years experience in teaching and tutoring.
Mike Hunnibell BEng, MBA, CPEng, FIEAust, GAICD

Mr Mike Griffin
Appointed by the API Board in December 2006, Mike brings over 30 years experience in power engineering and was most recently the Head of Network Asset Management at Energex. Mike has been involved with national forums including the Energy Networks Association Board, the NEMMCO Participant Advisory Committee, Standards Australia, Electro Technology Sector Board, and the Board of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia.
