Addressing Australia’s skills shortage in power engineering is a challenge welcomed by the incoming Chief Operating Officer of the Australian Power Institute (API), Mike Griffin.

Appointed by the API Board late last year, Mr. Griffin brings 30 years experience in power engineering and was most recently the head of Network Asset Management at Energex, the Chairman of the Board, Alan Flett, said.

“The API Board is pleased to appoint Mike Griffin who has had an extensive career in power engineering, both through operational management in the Queensland Energy Industry and from his involvement in industry forums,” Mr Flett said.

“Mr. Griffin’s involvement with national forums includes the Energy Networks Association Board, the NEMMCO Participant Advisory Committee, Standards Australia, Electro Technology Sector Board, and the Board of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia,” said Mr Flett, who is also Integral Energy’s General Manager of Network Asset Operations.

Mr. Griffin said he will face head-on the challenge of countering the skills gap in power engineering in Australia.

“I look forward to working with the many existing national industry members and Australian universities to deliver tangible outcomes which address the critical shortages in Australia’s power engineering skills needed now and in the future,”

Mr. Griffin said.“The key challenge going forward is to implement and execute well developed strategies that ensure we have people and skills to meet industry needs”.

“By doing this, then more power industry organisations will see the benefit of becoming API members and, importantly, government will also provide its support,” he said.

Mr. Griffin’s appointment commenced on 10 January 2007. The API is a national organisation established by the electricity power industry sector to boost the quality and numbers of engineering graduates with the skills and motivation for a career across the whole energy supply chain, from generation through to transmission and distribution, to use by end customers
