The power/energy industry is kind such that regardless of your background, you will be able to contribute. My advice would be to explore the different functions of the energy industry and try to find where your contribution as an individual would be most valuable. There are many people in the industry working towards a common goal. So, find where you fit in best.

Who am I

I'm a passionate and highly capable final year engineering student at the University of Adelaide. I've been actively involved in the power engineering industry since 2020 through the Australian Power Institute's Bursary Program and other ventures. I have a passion for financial markets in addition to renewable energy technology. I hope to use these two passions to build a fulfilling and rewarding career in Australia.

Why I chose a career in power

The power industry is undergoing a period of rapid change and put simply, I want to be a part of that process. Being a critical industry, it is rewarding to know that the work I do directly impacts the life of every person I meet. I also believe I have the relevant technical and soft skills to contribute to a great extent in the industry which further motivates me to develop my skills in the power sector. I can foresee myself working with various industry experts in progressing Australia towards its renewable energy future.

What's next?

I have been working at SA Power Networks in the equipment engineering team since January 2022. I have developed my engineering skills in equipment integration and project management over this time period. Furthermore, I have developed my understanding of the distribution network which can be a valuable skill when working on many projects within the power industry.
I have also managed media and education businesses in the past which has helped me develop my leadership skills and customer service skills. This will be integral in my career as I work to deliver renewables projects. I have also worked in a range of retail roles in which I have developed similar skills further. The novelty in processes and technology is very exciting for me. While traditionally, the power industry has been quite stagnant from an engineering perspective, the need to change our approach towards delivering electricity drives me. New technologies like flexible exports, dynamic operating envelopes and renewable generation technology requires fresh and bright minds to contribute through their engineering expertise. I am excited about the contributions I can make to the power industry and seeing the direct benefits they bring.
