Energy and power are fundamental to our daily lives, so I take a lot of pride in my ability to be able to contribute to that aspect of our existence.

Who am I

I'm Mai Tran, I was born and raised in Binh Duong, a southern province of Vietnam. I moved to Ho Chi Minh City to complete my university degree, stayed and worked there after graduation. A few years ago, I decided to take a career break to support my daughter’s oversea study and pursue a master’s degree in information technology and systems in Hobart, Tasmania. I went back to work in the power sector 5 years ago and have remained there since. My interest lies in learning about the culture differences through food, books, music, travels, and communicating with people.

Why I chose a career in power

Energy and power are fundamental to our daily lives, so I take a lot of pride in my ability to be able to contribute to that aspect of our existence. My passion for energy was rejuvenated after joining the renewable energy sector in Australia, I was particularly excited about the growth of the industry, and it is thrilling to be able to join the journey, Australia’ transition to a green energy future.

The multifaceted nature of the power sector was one of the biggest surprises when I began. There is a need for a multitude of different professions, and it fascinated me to see all the parts and professions come together to create something so incredible. I don’t necessarily understand all of other people's work, but I do understand its value, and its truly a pleasure to be able to see it in my daily life.

Where it all started

I have Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and English from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I completed a masters degree in information technology and systems in the University of Tasmania. My entire career has been in the energy and power sector in various capacities. I worked as an Executive Assistant and project document controller for multiple development projects in Vietnam. Currently I am an Information and Data specialist for TasNetworks.

My work experience.
What's next?

I am an Information and Data Specialist for North West Transmission Developments at TasNetworks. My role is to support the management of the information and data services for the project consisting of sites, registers and workflows, project specific management tools, knowledge management systems, file structures, Spatial GIS data storage and management. I am also responsible for assessing and implementing additional technology, systems and applications for the project and highlighting opportunities for continuous improvement to the information systems and project management. I was particularly excited about the growth of the industry. Australia has its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 43% from 2005 levels by 2030, working toward net zero by 2050. It is thrilling to be able to join the journey, Australia's transition to a green energy future. To achieve the targets, the power sector needs a skilled workforce of different professions, and it's a great opportunity for anyone who want to join the sector on the journey to clean energy.
