I have been fortunate enough to be involved in many API programs including being a Bursary/Scholarship recipient from 2013 to 2016 during my undergraduate studies as well as being part of the first POWERful Women program in 2022 in Adelaide.
I have visited schools before to advocate and encourage students to choose a career in power while I was a Bursary recipient. With the launch of the API Power Ambassador program, I was excited to be able to visit my old high school with my colleague Dragana Hele from Transgrid.
On Thursday 14th November, Dragana and myself visited Riverside Girls High School to promote the possible careers in the power industry and opportunities at Transgrid (intern program, graduate program, etc). We delivered a presentation and spoke to an audience of over 100 girls in the whole of the Year 10 cohort.
As API Power Ambassadors, we also shared the role the Australian Power Institute can play in supporting students in their journey to a career in the power industry.
We promoted engineering as a career choice and outlined my career journey into engineering and my experience with the API.
We spoke about the energy transition and Transgrid's role in it, which calls for an increased demand for skills like engineering for the students to consider. As we visited a girl’s high school, we also encouraged them to pursue a career in STEM and promoted the support that they can receive along the way as women in STEM/Engineering in the power industry.
