The API Learning Journal: supporting summer placements at API Member Organisations

The API Learning Journal is an innovative resource, available exclusively for API member organisations, designed to support undergraduate students during their industry placements.

This includes API PowerUP scholarship students (formerly API Bursary students) and ANY students doing summer work placements with member organisations.

The Learning Journal it a toolkit and set of activities that bridges the gap between academic learning and practical industry experience by providing structured activities for students to complete throughout their placements, typically over a 12-week summer period.

In collaboration with workplace supervisors, the API ensures that students are supported as they gain hands-on experience and meet any additional university requirements.

If you are an undergraduate student doing a placement over the summer at an API member organisation, or an industry professional who will be involved in hosting students over the summer, we invite you to reach out for more information. Please contact us at undergrads@api.edu.au.

Through reflective learning, the journal helps students enhance critical thinking, adapt to real-world challenges, and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse career pathways available in the power sector. The journal’s modules encourage collaboration, exposure to different industry approaches, and the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field.

Students also document their placement experience through written summaries and videos, which can be entered into the API’s annual PUP Video Challenge 2024 (api.edu.au). This helps sharpen their communication skills, allowing them to effectively convey technical subjects to a broader audience.

The Learning Journal is integrated into the API Academy (hosted on Thinkific), where students will also have access to additional learning modules and training opportunities, further enriching their experience.

New for 2024/2025, we will be surveying the experience of students and supervisors to provide feedback to individual organisations* and also to provide member organisations an industry specific report that identifying key trends (*exclusive to participating member organisations).
