Project Summary
During my internship in the telecommunications team at Powerlink, I primarily worked on Non-Regulated Enquiries (NREs), assessing the feasibility of new connections to the network. These connections included key assets such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), wind farms, and solar farms which are critical infrastructure for supporting Australia’s energy transition.
The goal of NRE’s are to evaluate the technical feasibility of integrating new connections into the transmission network. This involved analysing bearer systems and data networks available at substations ensuring that control and monitoring signals could be reliably transmitted between substations, control canters, and connected assets. A bearer in telecoms refers to the physical communication link that transports data between network elements. High-capacity bearers, such as Fiber-optic cables and microwave links, play a crucial role in maintaining secure and efficient operations. The data networks side of telecoms refers to the flow of information within substations. This information is then transported via bearer networks.
To complete each NRE, I assessed the availability of existing telecoms infrastructure, identified potential upgrades, and provided recommendations on how to integrate new assets without compromising network reliability.
